The 411

Kait and Bruce
I was born and raised in Texas, where I first learned my love of weather in Tornado Alley. I would venture out into storms with my father, a trained storm spotter, and listen intently to him relaying information into his Ham Radio. At home, I would watch each thunderstorm from the front porch, amazed by Mother Nature's Power. When Tornado Warnings were issued, I was glued to the meteorologists on TV, and when they suggested to take cover, I was the one gathering my family in our little hallway bathroom with pillows over our heads.

I knew I wanted to study my passion further and while at the University of Missouri, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to teach a class on Storm Chasing to University students, an experience I absolutely loved! I was also Treasurer of the Meteorology Club and a member of the Mizzou Storm Chase Team. While at Mizzou, I got my first experiences with  broadcast meteorology by producing weather segments for local radio stations and interning and filling-in at the local NBC affiliate in Columbia, MO.

I then had an incredible opportunity to intern at WFAA in Dallas. It was a tremendous learning experience and confirmed that I was definitely in the right career!

The day after I graduated from Mizzou with my degree in Atmospheric Science, I started my first job in Montgomery, AL as a weekday morning meteorologist. I learned by leaps and bounds, having a little fun along the way. I pioneered segments on the morning show called "Cooking with Kait" and "Coffee with Kait". Some of my most memorable moments were doing the weather live at the circus while balancing under a motorcycle on a tightrope 30 feet in the air, dancing with Sammy Stephens (see it here!), and having a rattlesnake draped across my neck!

While in Montgomery, I also spent a great deal of my free time volunteering at the local animal shelter. That's where I met Bruce, my right hand man. Bruce was not doing well in the shelter and had been there a very long time. I fostered Bruce, however that fostering very quickly turned into an adoption and I can't imagine my life without him!

I am now a meteorologist for WPTV NewsChannel 5 and WFLX Fox 29 in West Palm Beach, FL where I have earned my American Meteorological Society's CBM (Certified Broadcast Meteorologist). I am blessed to be working at a top-notch station with a weather team that has the experience of multiple hurricanes under their belt. I'm happy to have the challenge of forecasting for a new climate and the adrenaline rush of hurricane preparedness.
